Cajamarca

History, carnivals and natural life

Cajamarca, founded as «San Antonio de Cajamarca», is the most important city of the northern highlands of Peru, capital of the province and department of Cajamarca. It is located at 2750 masl on the eastern margin of the western chain of the Andes, in the inter-Andean valley formed by the Mashcón and Chonta rivers. It is a city in constant population growth, with the possibility of creating in the future a metropolitan area formed by the cities of Cajamarca and Baños del Inca and the annexation of some towns and villages near the urban area.

The area of Cajamarca had already been inhabited in the past during the Inca Empire, where it was already considered as an important populated center. In 1532, the capture of the Inca Atahualpa during the conquest of Peru took place in this place. At the time of the colony it maintained its status as a village until December 19, 1802, shortly before independence when it began to be considered a city and received its coat of arms.

It is known for its celebration of the carnival, as well as its important production of dairy products.
